Accessible bus services

All buses that operate on our bus network are fully accessible. These buses can kneel to the kerb, lowering the step to make it easier for passengers to board and having built-in ramps that can extend to the kerb for those who need it, including passengers with wheelchairs, prams or mobility devices.

Each accessible bus has fold-up chairs with space for two wheelchairs, prams or mobility devices. While all Transregional bus routes are serviced by fully accessible buses, not every bus stop on the network is accessible.

Mobility Aids

If you use a mobility aid such as a wheelchair or motorised scooter and it meets the specifications you can see below, you may use it on our network.

Some oversized wheelchairs and scooters are too big to take on board.

Remember that wheelchairs, bicycles, prams and other wheeled vehicles must use the lifts. If you are not sure where the lifts are, ask a staff member for help.

Dimensions

Your mobility aid should

  • Fit entirely inside within a 1300 mm by 800 mm space - this is the size of the allocated places on buses, trains and ferries
  • Be no more than 750 mm wide and 1600mm high
  • Weigh less than 300 kg including you and an assistant if you have one - this is the safe weight limit of boarding devices such as ramps.

Stability

Your mobility aid needs to

  • Have an effective braking system that completely stops it moving
  • Be capable of remaining upright when in use and when left unattended.

Manoeuvrability

To board buses your mobility aid should be able to

  • Turn 180 degrees within an area 2070mm by 1540mm
  • Turn 90 degrees with an internal radius of 770mm and external radius of 1620mm within a path of 850mm (when travelling by bus)
  • Cross a horizontal gap up to 60mm wide and mount a vertical rise (bump) up to 20mm
  • Negotiate a 1:14 grade ramp unassisted and a 1:4 grade ramp with assistance
  • Negotiate up to a 1:8 grade ramp that is less than 1520mm long
  • Cross a gap up to 75mm wide if you are accessing pedestrian level crossings
  • Cross grating gaps up to 13mm wide and 150mm long

Communication Cards

Communication Cards help you communicate with Transregional personnel. A communication card has two sections where you can write information.

  • Please stop at - this should show your destination.
  • Please help with the following - write in this area if you need the Transregional driver to assist you with anything concerning your trip.

When you enter a Transregional bus, show the driver your communication card.

You can obtain communication cards by contacting us or from any Transperth InfoCentre.
